On the 25th of January 2020, William Torbitt Primary School successfully achieved the Bronze: Rights Committed Award (the first stage of the Unicef UK’s Rights Respecting Schools Award). Our aim continues to be a school where children’s rights are at the heart of our ethos and culture, thereby improving well-being and to develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential. As part of this plan we will continue working towards recognition as a ‘Rights Respecting School’, with a view to gaining the Silver and ultimately Gold standard award. We aim to achieve our silver award by July 2021!

William Torbitt pupils learn about their rights by putting them into practice every day. A Rights Respecting School models rights and respect in all its relationships. Article 3 ‘The best interests of the child must be a top priority in all things that affect children’. This is our pledge to all the children of William Torbitt.

This year, the Autumn term began with a number of launch events taking place across the school, as pupils began to engage more and more with the concept of being a Bronze Rights Respecting School and the benefits this brings. We have been designing our own class charters and we ran a competition to create our very own Rights Respecting School mascot. On Tuesday 18th May, we held our Rights Respecting Mascot Elections and all our children and staff voted for our school mascot. REX, the dinosaur (created by Abdul in 5W) was the winner!

Our Ambassadors Pledge:

We aim to work closely with everyone to promote children’s rights through pupil voice. We pledge to listen to your opinions and take them seriously in order to ensure that our school remains a happy and enjoyable place for us to learn where every one of us is valued and safe. We aim to make a positive difference to each other, our community and the wider world in which we live to make it a better place. You can rely on us and ask questions at any time! The decisions and choices we make, will benefit you!
