Geography
At William Torbitt our termly Geography units are closely linked to our overall termly topics – this allows us to make links between different subjects, to use and apply vocabulary more widely, and to broaden and deepen our overall understanding of each subject.
Locational Geography topics (e.g. The UK) are taught with a ‘Zoom Lens’ approach – we begin looking at our local area very closely, then ‘Zooming out’ to take in a wider and wider picture, before eventually ‘Zooming back in’ to study locations in much greater detail.
Thematic Geography (e.g. Rivers) units are taught alongside wider termly topics that allow their content to support and enrich wider learning – pupils learn about oceans and continents in Geography whilst learning about famous explorers in History, or about Natural disaster whilst painting the Great Wave in Art.
Several of our units in Key Stage 2 have been chosen specifically because they speak to the specific context and experience of our school, our community and our pupils - by exploring these areas we help them better understand and navigate the world in which they live.
