History
At William Torbitt our termly History units are closely linked to our overall termly topics – this allows us to make links between different subjects, to use and apply vocabulary more widely, and to broaden and deepen our overall understanding of each subject.
Pupils in Key Stage 1 (Years 1 -2) explore both common features of everyday life over time (Toys and Houses), and learn about significant people and events from both the UK and the wider World.
When pupils reach Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) most of their history units are taught chronologically, however their summer term units do not follow this pattern as they are designed to integrate with our alternating UK and World Focuses ‘We Are’ topics. Most topics have several common threads which we revisit over and over again to help develop chronological awareness of changes over time and several of our units in Key Stage 2 have been chosen specifically because they speak to the specific context and experience of our school, our community and our pupils - by exploring these areas we help them better understand and navigate the world in which they live.
