Science
At William Torbitt our half termly Science units are closely linked to our overall termly topics – this allows us to make links between different subjects, to use and apply vocabulary more widely, and to broaden and deepen our overall understanding of each subject. For example, pupils learn about forces such as air and water resistance whilst building model boats in DT to race against each other.
Following the National Curriculum, many topics are repeated several times of the course of a pupil’s time in school, allowing opportunities for prior learning to be revisited, progressed and built upon. Most terms feature two distinct Science units; however the Summer term only includes one (as this term also includes our pupil led ‘We Are Us topics’)
Our Science curriculum focuses both on the development of knowledge (understanding how the word around us works and functions) and scientific investigative skills (exploring how we can make and test observations and questions), whilst also teaching pupils to vocabulary to explain and communicate both of these accurately and clearly.
Our Science curriculum is also support by our annual STEM Week (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) which during the Spring Term. As well as providing further opportunities for practical work and wider study it also features visitors from a range of fields visiting the school to help pupils see how learning in these areas can lead to a diverse range of interesting careers.
